I had this problem on Digg. Went to submit a story and the error message said there was something wrong with the subject of the link I had entered. So I tried re-typing it many different ways to no avail. So I Googled the error and found out that I had failed to select a category for the link! Most people would have given up by then.

These kinds of things are especially important for *retaining that first time user*. Most people who already know a Web site figure this stuff out, but the worse these kinds of things are the more it turns off the newbies. Usually new customers are the most difficult for companies to come by, so it is extremely important to keep them in mind. Clear error messages with instructions on what *action* to take is critical to winning them over and keeping them engaged with the product.

For personal projects, I always insist on adding a little poem to all my error messages. By itself, the poetry doesn't help --- but it means I am thinking about the message of the error, the information contained *and* the emotional response. By being aware that eventually I'll be the user, seeing that message, I ensure the non-poetry part of the error message is clear about what went wrong and what to do to fix it. As a special bonus, when screw up I chuckle a little instead of cursing.
